This section is dedicated to you if you are a marketing professional considering to use a quiz for marketing purposes. Let's for the sake of simplification use the term "Quiz Marketing" (QM) about the use of quizzes for marketing purposes. You will find our take on the approach in this section, and you may find some valuable tools as well.

Why you should use quizzes in your marketing

Do you ever wonder why quiz and trivia are good entertainment? My guess is, that man is curious by nature, and to learn what you know and don’t know about a subject is, I think, a great motivator for people to take quizzes and watch quiz shows. Competing and showing off are other important reasons for quizzing.

Here is a list of good reasons why quizzes are perfect as a marketing tool:

  • Quizzes attract web traffic
  • Quizzes support your product or company brand
  • Quizzes support your product marketing
  • Quizzes are very strong tools in response marketing
  • Quizzes can tell you much about your potential customers knowledge about your product (survey)
  • Quizzes are great fun Smile

Take a look at the sections below to learn more.

Quiz formats

One of the first things to decide is what quiz format to use. Should it be a Trivia quiz or social survey format? Trivia quizzes have proved to work for ages – everybody knows what to expect. Social surveys are developing fast, especially with the rise of social networks, where they tend to spread like a virus.

Which format of the above mentioned you should choose depends on the product and most important on the target group. Of course it is possible to use both formats at the same time too. The decission is typically depending on the topic/product and a discussion between the quiz writer and the Marketing department.

Quiz target groupMy experiences are that target groups in the ages from approx. 35-60 are to be addressed with trivia quizzes, while younger groups from 15-35 years are more likely to be reached through social surveys.

Social surveys has the advantage of being well suited for collecting information about the target group at the same time. Younger people spend a lot of time on social networks, and social surveys are perfect to use combined with social networks. It can also be easier to incorporate survey elements in the social survey format compared to the trivia quiz format.

Choosing the best format in each case is important and require some thoughts and analysis.

Create questions

Magic quiz questionsWriting those good magic quiz questions sounds very easy, but it takes some skill and experience to write questions, that are entertaining, rewarding and business supporting in their nature at the same time. And it takes quite some time as well.

The quiz writer will use the company USPs to write quiz questions that favour your product or service the most and make your product stand out from the crowd.

When using specific USPs, an example of the quiz writer’s work could be:

Q: Dandruff can be an annoying guest or inhabitant in your scalp, but what does it come from?

  1. Dead skin cells
  2. Dead hair
  3. Shampoo leftovers
  4. Inflammation in the hair follicles

And somewhere in or close to the quiz, you will see the USP of Head & Shoulders: "You get rid of dandruff".

Entertaining and rewarding questions are questions that are either surprising or adding something new to the player/contestant. It often works well if the contestant says: “Hey, I didn’t know that, really?!”

So formulating a question, that gives the contestant some information he didn’t have and then finishing it up with the question, is what we call an extended or elaborated quiz question.

To extend the question from above, you might phrase it like this: “Anti-dandruff shampoos containing ketoconazole, like Head-and-Shoulders, have been shown to be more effective on dandruff than other shampoos. But what does dandruff actually consist of?”

    1. Dead hair
    2. Dead skin cells
    3. Shampoo leftovers
    4. Inflammation in the hair follicles

Bringing the questions close to the products can be very difficult, if you are not an experienced quiz writer, unless of course there are large prizes at stake. The reason for this exception is that trivia players tend to be more tolerant towards business-like quizzes the larger the prizes are. Otherwise you have to connect question and product/company in a very elegant and humble way.
