Written by Claus Andersen

Have you ever heard a sports player explain why he didn’t win? “I didn’t have the legs today”… “There was too much (or too little) wind out there”…

Why not borrow a few of these ready-to-use excuses that you can rely on, when (or should I say if) you get a bad score at a quiz or trivia?

There are two main excuse strategies that you can choose to follow depending on your temper and level of self confidence:

The defensive strategy is where you try to explain your bad quiz performance with external factors. Examples of this very elegant strategy are:

•    The neighbor next door played heavy metal all night, that’s why I am sooooo tired…
•    I know that I know this stuff, but for some reason, it was all hidden in a black box, so I couldn’t recall it in any way …
•    I have never in my life ever heard of a quiz with that many stupid questions!
•    I had a very bad teacher in that class in school…
•    Who wants to memorize stuff like that anyway? …
•    There wasn’t enough quiz questions on my favorite topics …
•    Well, maybe I failed in this quiz, but I know all about 19th century stamps from Antarctica and Andalusia …

And then there is the more offensive strategy, where you throw some mud, and hope that you hit your opponent right in the neck:

•    People, who know stuff like that, must have very twisted brains… or they don’t have a life at all, so why don’t they get one…?
•    I am almost sure, that he cheated somehow… I just can’t figure out how …
•    The quizmaster is maybe even his cousin for all I care…
•    They were just lucky to get all the questions on that one particular topic, which they knew all about …

You may choose different strategies from one game to another. (Did I just imply that you often lose? Of course not!) You do have one last alternativ: You can train your quiz and trivia skills - have a look at these quizzes and trivia or read the article about how to improve your trivia skills.

But no matter what you do, I will not guarantee you, that people won’t make fun of you and your excuses (that was a final disclaimer).

If you can think of any further excuses for losing a quiz game, you may leave a comment and share your thoughts below.

Thanks for bringing this.

I have personally heard excuses about the
questions distribution a lot - combined with luck as a factor.

I think that
these excuses apply to a lot of games, including poker

It's not my habit to search excuses when I'm wrong: I apply the law of
"I, Me and Mine".
I was wrong, because there was nothing but
me involved, and will be a responsability of mine to improve my
capability.

enthusiasm." W.Churcill
