The Social Network Survey Addiction Print E-mail
Written by Claus Andersen

If you have an e-mail account, chances are you’ve seen a social network survey. If you have a social network account (Myspace or Facebook) then you have definitely seen, and possibly filled out, a social network survey.

Be warned that these surveys are a dangerous addiction. You may learn a thing or two about your friends, and even about yourself, by answering challenging questions. But when you find yourself filling out social network surveys on a daily basis, answering questions that you have already answered repeatedly (because many of the questions can be very much alike), then you are suffering an addiction. If you do, you may find some cool links in our quiz links section.

A social network survey comes in many forms, all just as addiction. The least addicting, however, is a multiple choice or check box survey.

Check Box Survey

Since answering a question only requires deleting the previous checks and placing your own Xs in the appropriate area, these are the least likely to form an addiction. These are the least likely to seem attractive at the time you are checking your Myspace bulletins or email, and sometimes a quick read through will convince you that you have something better to do.

Example of a Check Box Survey:

How Redneck are you? (check the following and then add up your score)

[ ] You have slept with your cousin

[X] You like beer

[X] You like to fish

[X] You own at least one TV that doesn’t work

[X] Your working TV sits on top of a TV that doesn’t work

Total: 4

Now multiply your score by 20 and repost with the heading “I am __ % Redneck”

Corny Surveys

Corny surveys are the most dangerous survey. These are the virgin drinks that appear to be alcoholic. You start to fill one out, and everything seems just fine, until suddenly you are bombarded with corny questions.

Example of a Corny Survey:

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you bring?

A flare fun, a CB radio, and a bottle of rum to kill time while I wait

What is your favorite thing to do on a first date?

Rob a bank, steal a car, elope and then wake up in Mexico

What is the quickest way to a man’s heart?

Straight through the rib cage!

Are you crushing on anyone right now?

I can’t answer that, my husband might read this…

Would you jump in front of a bullet for your boyfriend/girlfriend?

I’d probably be on the other side of the gun…

Do you believe in soul mates?

By this point, you can recognize that if you choose to not answer the next 50 similar questions, and instead decide to go stand on your head for 20 minutes… you will make better use of your precious time.

Downright Nosy Surveys

There is a strong chance that the US Government is behind each of these surveys. They’re not as subtle in their attempts to know and control everything as they think they are!

Example of Downright Nosy Survey Questions:

Who was your last phone call?

Who was your last instant message?

What does the 3d text message in your cell phone say?

What are you wearing?

What was the last thing you ate?

Finally, there is the worst and most dangerous survey of all. Not for the addictive values, but because these surveys cause dishonesty in a person whom has an addiction to filling out every social network survey they cross paths with.

Surveys that Make You Lie

What is your favorite:

Color?

Food?

Restaurant?

Movie?

Website?

Number?

Day?

Month?

Okay, okay. You may have fun answering some of these questions, but a survey addict can not leave a question blank. Your choices are to stare at a computer screen for 20 minutes, trying to think of a number, day, or month that you particularly favor… or to quickly pick a number, day or month to nominate as your favorite. Really, who has a favorite month? Chances are, the answer you give will be fabricated. Dishonesty is a very bad trait to have, so it’s better to avoid a survey that encourages dishonesty.

The Best Social Network Surveys

They may (almost) all be fun to fill out, but the best social network survey is one that inspires creativity and though. One that is okay to sit back and really think about your answers. You never know what may come up!

Example of a better social network survey question:

Name 5 things you can do with a brick.

It is priceless to see how your friends will answer, and it is fun to come up with unique answers of your own. Go ahead and try it… what 5 things can you do with a brick?

My answers:

(1) lay it (snicker)

(2) cut out a hole, drop in a match and call it a tiny fireplace

(3) throw it through the window of a local liquor shop

(4) drop it from the roof of a tall building just to see what will happen (perhaps race it with a penny)

(5) give the brick to MacGyver along with a rubber band, a paper clip, and a pineapple to see what he could do with it.

No matter which way you look at it, a social network survey can be a good thing from time to time, as long as you carefully screen through before committing to filling it out. To prevent being addictive to surveys - take a trivia quiz from time to time.
