When I first started writing on 1st-Quiz; I also started thinking about what to call all those thousands of people who has interest in quiz and trivia and who loves to quiz in every meaning of the word. At first I thought; maybe the term “quiz lovers” is the right word!? I soon rejected that term again; mostly because I thought it created a picture of two lovers walking as silhouettes against a sunset while quizzing each other all night long.
Quiz fans
After that I started using the word “quiz fan” which I basically think is an OK term. It smells a bit like sports, but then again, that’s alright by me – after all, there is a degree of competition in the quiz concept. I also used the term “quiz enthusiast” once in a while, but I found it a bit too neutral compared to how strong I meant it.
Then I started searching for quiz blogs and communities. I was a bit surprised to learn new terms and words for quiz fans during this process. One blog I came across referred to a community on Yahoo named “Quinkie” as a contraction of the words “quiz” and “junkie”. That discovery rocked! I then started developing new variations and terms. Quizniac
How about “Quizniac”? I can act like a maniac myself once I get started with a pub quiz machine. I try over and over again to beat my self (I have given up the high scores) – and the buttons are pushed harder and harder for every try.
Then there is the terms “quiz nerd” or “quiz geek” – I don’t like being called that my self, maybe because it in my opinion has a slightly negative note.
The latest idea was to use the term “quizligans”… but considering everything, I dropped it promptly. The association brought to me was: watching passively and violence – not perfect adverbs to quizzing and trivia. I guess that I will over test all the terms over the next years, so that I can agree with my self, which term to use. You are welcome to assist me in the forum.
